First I'd like to say that many of the "Haters" of the Star Wars fans began to form up when Lucas began releasing his prequels. Those "Haters" hung on to the old school cinematics George Lucas had used in his previous Star Wars films and rallied against anything remotely different in his prequels. Wake up and smell the ILM Crew you out of date Bantha Fodder! Times change and puppeteers are losing their jobs to green screens and computer animated graphics. So shut up!
Now, where was I? Thos commentators in Episode I...were they a good idea or a bad idea? When I first saw the movie, i was so enthralled with other aspects of the film I totally ignored those weird guys. However, after seeing the film countless times, I've grown a bit indifferent to the commentators. That being said, I'm not sure if there was really any other way to film this scene. I guess it was the voice talent that really bothered me, but perhaps it would've sounded just as ridiculous with any voice talent.
There were many things seen in the prequels that may have bursted peoples' bubbles of their preconceived notions regarding the Star Wars universe. Besides this scene, we saw robots playing football, scrolling billboards, and diners (complete with robaot waitresses and a fat cook), etc. I say all that simply to explain that this was George Lucas' universe as he envisioned. And George included Pod-Racing Commentators in that universe whether you like it or not! This may not be my favorite scene (okay, it's not even close to being my favorite scene) in Episode I, but it certainly wasn't a bad idea. Perhaps someone can throw me a scenario that Lucas could've used instead of these silly commentators and then maybe I'd change my mind. But until that happens...my decision stands!
GOOD IDEA: The Pod-Racing Commentators
Oh, and I should know,
